Arizona Coyotes owner Alex Meruelo announced on Wednesday a proposed plan to build a $1 billion entertainment district in Reno, Nevada that includes a 10,000 seat arena that will host the University of Nevada men’s basketball team.

“The vision is to transform GSR into a destination where community, sports and entertainment come together,” Meruelo said via Nevada Sportsnet. “The precipice of an extraordinary transformation is upon us. This will not only redefine Grand Sierra Resort but also elevate Reno to new heights in the realm of entertainment and sports. We recognize and value the community's support and enthusiasm as we commence this journey together.”

During the announcement, there was no mention of the Coyotes or even professional hockey at all for that matter. However, the senior vice president and chief strategy officer for the Meruelo Group, Andrew Diss, made it clear moving the Coyotes to Reno is not on their agenda.

“There is no intention to move the Coyotes to Reno at this point,” Diss said. “Obviously, they're an NHL team. They need a much bigger venue. There are a lot of rumors about that. But at this point in time, we're not planning on hockey. But we could do preseason tournaments. We would love to have the Coyotes possibly play the Knights up here preseason. I think there would be a huge demand for that. It would sell out in a day. But as far as having a team play here, we don't have any plans currently.”

The Coyotes minor league affiliate plays in Tucson, Arizona and while Diss does not see a world where they would move that team to Reno, he did not rule out that possibility for the future.

“Same thing,” Diss said. “If it makes sense down the road, we'll take a look at it. But at this point, we're really focused on the concert piece and the basketball piece.”

Both the NHL and Coyotes organization have publicly made it clear that they want to keep professional hockey in Arizona.

As the season progresses, there should be more clarity regarding the Coyotes future arena plans. The team is set to play at Mullett Arena in what will be their second season in Tempe.
