The Boston Bruins lost multiple players this off-season. One of them was forward Cole Koepke, as he signed a one-year, $1 million contract with the Winnipeg Jets through free agency last month.
Koepke was a nice surprise for the Bruins last season, as he broke out for the Original Six club and cemented himself as a full-time NHL player. In 73 games this past season with the Bruins, Koepke recorded new career highs with 10 goals, seven assists, 17 points, and 177 hits. This was after he had one goal and three points in 26 games over his two previous seasons with the Tampa Bay Lightning.
When noting that Koepke joined the Bruins on a two-way deal last off-season and was initially viewed as simply a depth signing for them, there is no question that he provided good value for the Bruins. It is why he got himself a bit of a raise this off-season with his new contract with the Jets.
While Koepke was among the smaller signings of this summer, he has the potential to be a very good fit for the Jets. When looking at their current roster, Koepke should see time in their bottom six, especially when noting that he can play either wing. Furthermore, he should also help replace some of the grit the Jets lost with Brandon Tanev leaving Winnipeg for the Utah Mammoth this off-season.
Nevertheless, it is going to be intriguing to see how much of an impact Koepke can make for the Jets. The potential for him to be a solid bottom-six forward for them, just like he was with the Bruins, is there.
