The Buffalo Sabres have had some significant busts in the NHL Draft throughout their history, and on this day in 1999, the club followed up their Stanley Cup final appearance with a swing and a miss by selecting Alaska native Barrett Heisten 20th overall. The winger played two years for the University of Maine before shifting to the Seattle Thunderbirds of the WHL. Buffalo did not sign Heisten to an entry-level contract and after playing 10 NHL games with the NY Rangers, he spent the remaining seven years of his pro career in the ECHL and AHL.
