The Buffalo Sabres are in their 56th season and have a storied history. The club has 15 players who have been inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame, and many others who deserve recognition. Over the next few weeks, we will be looking at players in Sabres history by their jersey number, ranking the top three players to wear that particular number.
The top three who wore #27 in team history are: Larry Playfair, Michael Peca, and Teppo Numminen.
Playfair was a Sabres first round pick in 1978 who made the NHL as a 20-year-old and soon became one of the NHL’s premier enforcers, exceeding 100 penalty minutes for seven straight years, until he was traded to Los Angeles in 1986. Peca was acquired from Vancouver in the Alexander Mogilny deal in 1995 and scored over 20 goals three times in five seasons, leading the Sabres to the Stanley Cup Final in 1999. Numminen was an All-Star who played with Winnipeg, Phoenix, and Dallas, and joined the Sabres at 37 years old, playing on both Eastern Conference finalists in 2006 and 2007.
