The Buffalo Sabres are in their 56th season and have a storied history. The club has 15 players who have been inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame, and many others who deserve recognition. Over the next few weeks, we will be looking at players in Sabres history by their jersey number, ranking the top two players to wear that particular number.

The top two who wore #44 in team history are: Alexei Zhitnik and Andrej Sekera.

Zhitnik was acquired from the Los Angeles Kings in a trade involving Grant Fuhr in 1995 and spent nine seasons in Buffalo, including the year when the Sabres went to the Cup Final in 1999. His best year was a 45-point campaign in 1998 (15 goals, 30 assists.). Sekera played the first seven of his 16-year NHL career in Buffalo, mostly as a depth defenseman, before being traded to Carolina in 2013, where he posted a career-high 44 points with the Hurricanes.
