The Buffalo Sabres are in their 56th season and have a storied history. The club has 15 players who have been inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame, and many others who deserve recognition. Over the next few weeks, we will be looking at players in Sabres history by their jersey number, ranking the top two players to wear that particular number. Since fewer players have worn higher numbers in the club’s history, we will look at a range of numbers.

The top two who wore #72 through 74 in team history are: Tage Thompson and Jay McKee

Thompson was a first-round pick of the St. Louis Blues in 2016 and played part of one season with the Blues before being included in the Ryan O’Reilly deal. The lanky forward battled injuries for nearly three seasons, but emerged in 2021-22 with a 38-goal campaign. In the last four seasons, he has scored over 40 goals twice and seems on his way to a third 40-goal season this year. McKee was a first-round pick of the Sabres in 1995 and established himself as a premier shutdown defenseman. He played 10 seasons in Buffalo, including the club’s 1999 Cup Final appearance and the run to the Eastern Conference Final in 2006.
