The Buffalo Sabres are in their 56th season and have a storied history. The club has 15 players who have been inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame, and many others who deserve recognition. Over the next few weeks, we will be looking at players in Sabres history by their jersey number, ranking the top three players to wear that particular number.
The top three who wore #9 in team history are: Gilles Hamel, Derek Roy, and Jack Eichel.
Hamel was a big scorer in the QMJHL after being selected in the fourth round in 1979. The winger averaged 20 goals over a four-year span before being traded to Winnipeg for Scott Arniel in 1986. Roy was part of the Sabres consecutive Eastern Conference Finalists and scored 20 or more goals in four straight seasons. Eichel was the second-overall pick in 2015 and wore #15 his first three seasons, but switched to #9 after Evander Kane was traded in 2018. In those two years, he scored 28 and his career-high 36 goals before suffering a neck injury and eventually being traded to Vegas in 2021.
