The Buffalo Sabres are in their 56th season and have a storied history. The club has 15 players who have been inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame, and many others who deserve recognition. Over the next few weeks, we will be looking at players in Sabres history by their jersey number, ranking the top three players to wear that particular number.

The top three who wore #40 in team history are: Patrick Lalime, Robin Lehner, and Carter Hutton:

Lalime served as a backup for the Sabres for three seasons, and that is the nicest thing that can be said of his tenure, as he posted a 9-26-5 record with Buffalo before retiring in 2011. Lehner was acquired in the summer of 2015 for a first-round pick and played three seasons with the Sabres, the first of which was riddled with injury issues. After two years as their primary starter, Buffalo did not offer the big Swede a qualifying offer, and he signed with the New York Islanders. Hutton was signed in 2018 to replace Lehner as the starter after an excellent year in St. Louis, but he could not repeat his success with the Sabres, going 31-49-10 over three seasons.
