Levi Heading To Amerks During NHL All-Star BreakThe Buffalo Sabres for the third time this season and the second time this month have sent rookie goaltender Devon Levi to the Rochester Americans of the American Hockey League, but as with his previous demotions, it appears to be to get the 22-year-old netminder some work while the Sabres are idle during the NHL All-Star break.
Levi has seen NHL action twice since January 9th, a 5-2 loss to the Seattle Kraken and a 5-3 victory over the Los Angeles Kings on Wednesday. In the win, Levi allowed three first-period goals on seven shots before settling down and making the final 33 saves.
Eric Comrie was recalled from the AHL Americans and has performed well since clearing waivers and being demoted (3-1-0, 2.58 GAA, .920 save %), but even though the club has not indicated anything, Levi is likely being sent down for the next week while the NHL is on hiatus.
Rochester has three games scheduled over the next week; on Wednesday at home against Syracuse, and back-to-back road games in Laval against the Rockets on Friday and Saturday.
The Sabres carried three goalies through the first quarter of the season, in part because Luukkonen and Comrie would have both required waivers to be sent down to the AHL. Levi has struggled with consistency in his first full NHL season. He was sent down after going 3-4-1 in nine appearances in October and November.
The Sabres are not scheduled to play until February 6 against the Dallas Stars at Key Bank Center, when it is likely that they will recall the youngster, but with Luukkonen getting the majority of the starts, there may be some thought to giving Levi a lengthy stretch of work in the AHL leading into the Calder Cup Playoffs, since it is a longshot that Buffalo will be playing past the middle of April.
