2023 Calder Trophy finalist has not missed a game this season

The Buffalo Sabres have not had much luck when it has come to injuries and are in a state of limbo regarding defenseman Owen Power. The 21-year-old blueliner left midway through practice at Key Bank Center on Monday with an unspecified injury.

Head coach Don Granato did not provide an update on Power’s status after practice, other than saying that he was having some imaging done to examine the extent of the injury.

The 2023 Calder Trophy finalist has had an up-and-down sophomore season, with 18 points (2 goals, 16 assists) in 51 games, averaging 22:28 per game (second to Rasmus Dahlin on the club).

Buffalo has already their fair share of injuries. Defenseman Mattias Samuelsson is out for the season after undergoing surgery on an upper-body injury, and winger Jack Quinn is out two months after surgery on a lower-body injury.

"We've had to battle different things, certainly expectations being one of them. Injuries being another. Nobody wants to hear that, I don't even want to say it, but it's a factor. You go through these things." Sabres head coach Don Granato said. "You're faced with different expectations that you'd have to learn to deal with. All of the frustration that we go through here, the situations we go through, we have to monitor it to make certain it is making the experience of going through it makes us stronger and better."

The Sabres have depth to absorb injuries up front, with prospects such as Jiri Kulich, Isak Rosen, or Lukas Rousek down in Rochester, but their depth on defense is not extensive. Jacob Bryson is currently the extra defenseman with rookie Ryan Johnson inserted in the lineup to replace Samuelsson. If Power is out for any prolonged period, it will likely result in Kale Clague being recalled from the AHL Amerks.
