Sabres Demote Devon Levi To The AHL
The Buffalo Sabres have been carrying three goaltenders the entire regular season, something that GM Kevyn Adams and head coach Don Granato said was not an ideal situation, but was something that the club could deal with. On Tuesday, the club announced they were demoting rookie goalie Devon Levi to the Rochester Americans of the American Hockey League.
Levi, 21, in nine appearances with the Sabres this season went 3-4-1, with a 3.73 GAA and .876 save %.
After winning the Mike Richter Award (the NCAA’s best goalie) for the second straight season, Levi signed with the Sabres and played seven games at the end of the season, going 5-2-0, but did not go down to the AHL to play for the Amerks during their run to the Calder Cup Eastern Conference Final. Buffalo believed that the youngster was ready for prime time and opted not to add a veteran tandem partner.
Levi was handed the reins to start the season but went 1-3-0 before suffering a lower-body injury in late October. Since returning, the rookie has gone 2-1-1 but has allowed four or more goals in five of his eight starts.
The Sabres had been rotating their three goalies the last two weeks, but broke their rotation on Monday against the NY Rangers, starting Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen in Levi’s turn. Luukkonen made 25 saves in the 5-1 win over the Rangers, improving his record to 6-3-1, with a 2.54 GAA, and .918 save %.

It is unknown how long Levi will be staying in Rochester, but it is likely that the Sabres want the youngster to get regular work if Luukkonen is slated to get a heavier workload.
