Buffalo turns to Comrie after losses with Levi and Luukkonen
The Buffalo Sabres have been inconsistent all season, with their powerhouse offense averaging less than three goals per game, their power play wallowing in the bottom five of the league, and their goaltending giving them a good performance one night and a subpar effort the next.
After rookie Devon Levi was pulled after allowing five goals on 18 shots against Boston on Tuesday, Sabres head coach Don Granato will turn to Eric Comrie with Buffalo facing the Winnipeg Jets in the first game of a three-game road swing.
The issue with the Sabres situation in goal is that no one has given head coach Don Granato a reason to lean on them as a primary starter after nearly 20% of the season has been played. Levi has been given the greatest opportunity, with four starts at the beginning of the year, but the 21-year-old went 1-3 before suffering a lower-body injury.
Luukkonen, who was plagued by inconsistency last season, has been slightly better this year, but always throws in a head-scratcher when you think he is about to string a bunch of good starts together.
Comrie, who played well in starts against New York and Montreal, left in the second period of a 5-4 loss to New Jersey on October 27 with a groin injury and has been out for three weeks.
With the loss of center Tage Thompson, the Sabres will have to get more production throughout their lineup, but they will also need some stability between the pipes to stay in the Eastern Conference playoff race.
