Peterka Takes The Lead

Several Sabres players have had disappointing follow-up seasons to last year’s breakout campaigns, but sophomore J-J Peterka has been the exception to the rule. The 22-year-old had 32 points (12 goals, 20 assists) in his rookie year, but stepped up in the summer at the World Championships for Germany.

After 49 games, Peterka has already exceeded his rookie point total and after scoring four goals in the last two games of the California road swing, he leads the Sabres with 18 goals.

Quinn Down And Out

Jack Quinn did not show much rust after returning from an Achilles injury in late December and missing most of the first half. The 22-year-old had 12 points entering his 17th game on Saturday, but the winger left the game in the third period after being hit along the boards by San Jose’s Tomas Hertl.

Head coach Don Granato did not elaborate on the nature or extent of the injury, other than to say it was likely not day-to-day in nature.

Stumbling Out Of The Gate (Repeatedly)

The Sabres consistency in surrendering early leads is remarkable. In all three games against Anaheim, Los Angeles, and San Jose, Buffalo fell behind by multiple goals. Against the Ducks, the Sabres allowed the first three goals in a 4-2 loss. In Los Angeles, Buffalo trailed 3-1 after 20 minutes and scored four unanswered goals in a 5-3 win over the Kings, and on Saturday they gave up the first two goals to Mark-Edouard Vlasic and Jan Rutta before scoring the next five goals in a 5-2 win.
