Leafs GM Brad Treliving in Buffalo, 10 NHL clubs taking in Buffalo’s afternoon game vs. St. Louis
The Buffalo Sabres barring a late-season rally are expected to be a seller before the March 8th trade deadline, and that means that NHL clubs interested in acquiring one of the half dozen pending unrestricted free agents (or perhaps a younger player like center Casey Mittelstadt) will be keeping a watchful eye on the Blue and Gold over the next few weeks.
Excluding the NHL area scouts that are here for nearly all of Buffalo’s games, 10 NHL clubs were represented at the Sabres - St. Louis Blues game on Saturday afternoon. The most curious of the representatives is Maple Leafs GM Brad Treliving and along with another Toronto scout, as well as a pair of Vancouver Canucks scouts.
The Maple Leafs, who are in a battle for third place in the Atlantic Division and one of the two Eastern Conference playoff spots, are rumored to be looking for defensive and forward depth but do not have a great deal of draft capital after a series of trades made before last year’s deadline. Vancouver may be looking for another blueliner after deals with Calgary to add former Sabre Nikita Zadorov and center Elias Lindholm.
Other clubs represented were the Boston Bruins, Dallas Stars, Edmonton Oilers, New Jersey Devils, Ottawa Senators, Vegas Golden Knights, and Washington Capitals. None of these clubs play the Sabres in the next month.
Pending UFA's such as Zemgus Girgensons, Victor Olofsson, Erik Johnson, Kyle Okposo, or Eric Robinson may be drawing interest from contending clubs, but it is likely for the Sabres to get anything of consequence in return, that GM Kevyn Adams will have to retain salary.
