Is it possible that what appears to be an untradeable contract, could actually be movable?

Is it possible that what appears to be an untradeable contract, could actually be movable?

Sergei Belski-USA TODAY Sports - Columnist Pegs Western Conference Club as Trade Suitor for Jonathan Huberdeau

Adam Gretz of Bleacher Report took a look at some of the NHL's worst contracts and wondered if there were potential trade partners out there who could or would take them on. Among them was Jonathan Huberdeau of the Calgary Flames.

Gretz suggests the Flames may have a potential trade partner for Huberdeau in the St. Louis Blues.

After acquiring Huberdeau in a blockbuster trade with the Florida Panthers, the Flames expected him to be a top-line scorer. However, his numbers dramatically fell off and he's yet to find his form. The Flames hope to get some value out of Huberdeau's deal, but it's clear they overpaid and they could be stuck with his deal as the team tries to rebuild.

The Flames have offloaded big contracts this past year and a trade involving Huberdeau could be mutually beneficial. Gretz proposes a swap between the Flames and Blues that would send Huberdeau to St. Louis in exchange for defenseman Colton Parayko.

Both players are signed through the 2027-28 season, are in their early 30s, and could benefit from a change of scenery. Parayko is an Alberta native, known for his defensive reliability and ability to log big minutes. An already depleted blue line could be depleted even further if the team chooses to trade Rasmus Andersson. After the team moved Chris Tanev and Noah Hanifin, Parakyo would help fill a sizeable hole.

Additionally, this trade could offer the Flames some salary cap relief.

Gretz argues the Blues could use some goal-scoring help.  They ranked 24th in goals scored last season and if Huberdeau can find his game or simply needs a fresh start, he could be a useful piece of their offense. The Blues have the cap space to accommodate his contract, especially if the Flames are willing to retain some salary.

This would be a shake-up for both teams, and it's a long shot. But, is it completely out of the realm of possibility? At least one scribe doesn't think so.
