The Calgary Flames signed 2021 first-round draft choice Matt Coronato to a three-year, entry level contract on Sunday, and it is expected he will join the team early this week.
Coronato collected 20 goals and 36 points in his sophomore season at Harvard, which surprisingly ended on Friday in an 8-1 loss to Ohio State in the first round of the NCAA championship tournament. His 20 goals was second on the Crimson.
A 5-10, 185-lb., right winger, Coronato is known for having a scorer’s touch and a proven desire to be a difference maker.
The 20-year-old product of Greenlawn, NY, finished eighth in points in the ECAC this season and netted a conference-leading five game-winning goals.
He was also selected to the second team All-ECAC squad.
The Flames will practice on Monday in preparation for Tuesday’s home clash with the Los Angeles Kings.
By signing a NHL deal now, it is expected Coronato will play at least one NHL game before the season ends. He would not be eligible to play for the AHL Calgary Wranglers because he was not on their roster on the March 3 deadline.
The Flames are in the midst of an uphill battle to make the Stanley Cup playoffs. Calgary has eight games remaining in the regular season, and is four points behind the Winnipeg Jets for the final wild-card playoff spot.
