Flames keep McDavid and Draisaitl off the scoresheet but Oilers beat Calgary 3-1 at the Saddledome on Hockey Day in Canada

If you told the Calgary Flames ahead of time they’d be able to keep both Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl off the scoresheet, you can bet they’d predict a victory over the Edmonton Oilers.
But in stark contrast to the loss against the Toronto Maple Leafs a couple of nights earlier, the Flames didn’t get burned by the stars. They got beat by the surging Oilers’ secondary scoring.
On goals by Ryan McLeod, Sam Gagner and an empty-netter from Zach Hyman, the Oilers earned their record 13th straight victory at the Saddledome on Hockey Day in Canada with a 3-1 decision over their provincial rival Flames.
Sometimes you need some luck, and the Oilers got that on a pinball goal that proved to be the winner. Gagner flipped the puck toward the crease from the back of the net and it banked in off a defender’s stick and goalie Dan Vladar’s glove before anyone really knew where it was.
As well as they played the rest of the way, the Flames were lucky to be in contention thanks to a stellar opening period from Vladar, who finished with 12 of his 30 saves on the night in the first period.
MacKenzie Weegar tied the game for the Flames in the second period on a nice rush alongside Blake Coleman, but the team couldn’t get anything else past Stuart Skinner – who tied a franchise record with his 10th straight win.
One streak ended thanks to the Flames’ attention to detail, though. McDavid’s point streak ended at a dozen.
Gagner’s goal was deflating, but the game wasn’t really over until Hyman’s tenacious effort on the third goal with Vladar on the bench.
The Flames’ second straight loss during a six-game homestand ahead of the all-star break puts them in a tough position after clawing back into the wildcard race. With St. Louis, Columbus and Chicago heading to the Dome next, Calgary could use a sweep of the second half to stay in the thick of it.
