Flames and Battle of Alberta rival in very different situations at this point of the season

David Banks-USA TODAY Sports - Calgary Flames Rivals Sign Corey Perry for Playoff Push

After adding No. 13 to their winning streak by beating the Calgary Flames on Saturday, the Edmonton Oilers added an edgy veteran to the roster.

Following weeks of speculation, the Flames’ provincial rivals added free agent Corey Perry for what they believe could be a Stanley Cup season.

Perry — who had his contract terminated by the Chicago Blackhawks this season for conduct detrimental to the team — has been to the Cup final four times, including a win with the Anaheim Ducks in 2007 and three straight losses while with Montreal, Dallas and Tampa Bay.

Perry had four goals and nine points in 16 games with the Blackhawks before the incident led to the termination of his contract in November.

It certainly brings another element of aggression to the Battle of Alberta. The Calgary Flames and Edmonton Oilers meet again up north on Feb. 24 then at the Saddledome on April 6. Both are prime time Hockey Night in Canada specials.

The Flames have a lot of work to do to get into the same conversations as the Oilers right now. Their rival is the hottest team in hockey with aspirations of winning it all.

Amazing what a long winning streak can do for you.

The Flames had hoped to take advantage of a six-game home stand but have started 1-2-0 and are hovering around the .500 mark again after a season long four-game win streak started this stretch at the Saddledome.

It has been one or two steps forward and just as many back for the team so far.

Soon they’ll have to decide what they’re doing with a few high-end pending unrestricted free agents.

They’re definitely not in a position to add — unlike the Oilers.
