Heading into their Christmas break, only two Calgary Flames players are a lock to score 20 goals. Will anyone else reach that plateau despite the NHL's 25th-ranked offense?

Heading into their Christmas break, only two Calgary Flames players are a lock to score 20 goals. Will anyone else reach that plateau despite the NHL's 25th-ranked offense?

Last year, the Calgary Flames had two 30-goal scorers, Yegor Sharangovich (31) and Blake Coleman (30). After them, Nazem Kadri (29) and MacKenzie Weegar (20) rounded out the team's four 20-goal scorers.

Only ten players reached double digits in goals, with former Flames defenseman Noan Hanifin ranking last on the list with 11 lamplighters before his trade.

Of the 35 players to dress at least one game for Calgary in 2023-24, 30 found the back of the net. The Flames finished with 253 goals, good enough for 18th in the NHL.

This season, the team is struggling to score consistently, with just 92 goals in 34 games, which ranks 25th in the league. Despite having the 20th-best GA/GP totals at 3.09, they rank lower, again at 25, regarding GF/GP at just 2.71.

Thankfully, Jonathan Huberdeau is having a bounce-back season with 13 goals, the same number as Nazem Kadri, the only two skaters in double digits already. However, they will be joined shortly by Matt Coronato (nine), Connor Zary (eight), and Coleman.

Considering the Flames had four 20-goal scorers last season and missed the playoffs by 17 points, they are holding down the second wild card spot heading into their Christmas break.

But with scoring across the lineup down this season, do the Flames have any more 20-goal threats outside of Huberdeau and Kadri?

According to projections available at Elite Prospects, Calgary could have just three 20-goal scorers this season, which is one fewer than last year.

Interestingly, like Coleman, Zary is on pace for 19, each missing the 20-goal milestone by a single tally. Meanwhile, Sharangovich could reach 17 despite only six so far in 27 games.

Moreover, after the best campaign of his career in 2023-24, Weegar drops out of the club because he is on pace for just ten goals, while captain Mikael Backlund is projected for 14.

Despite the potential for a significant decrease in team scoring this season, the Flames have had a solid campaign heading into their Christmas break.

Instead of being three spots out of a wildcard spot a year ago, they are in charge of their destiny by holding down that second wildcard spot without running up scores on opponents.
