Three Takeaways From Canes 3-2 Overtime Win Over Sabres

    Post-Practice Update 11-9-23

The Carolina Hurricanes won their second straight overtime Tuesday night, defeating the Buffalo Sabres 3-2 Tuesday night.

Goals by Tony DeAngelo, Brady Skjei and Martin Necas, who scored the OT winner, helped propel the Hurricanes and Antti Raanta turned aside 20 shots.

Here are my three takeaways from the game:

    Special Teams

The Canes special teams is continuing to round into form as the season goes along and it came through once again in Buffalo.

The penalty kill was crucial, killing off two minors to Jordan Staal in the opening 10 minutes of the game as well as killing off Jordan Martinook's penalty in the final minutes of regulation of a tied game too.

While it did concede a goal to Rasmus Dahlin, a high-end solo play by Dahlin, it came through in the critical moments.

The power play too has continued to be strong as it has scored a power play goal in five straight games.

Carolina converted on their first power play opportunity of the game as Tony DeAngelo kept a clearing attempt in and wristed a shot through.

The following power plays also helped to generate momentum despite not scoring as they pounded the Sabres with chances.

    Some High-End Chemistry

The Carolina Hurricanes' new second line of Jesperi Kotkaniemi centering Andrei Svechnikov and Teuvo Teravainen looked absolutely electric against the Sabres.

While they didn't score, they did generate the most even strength chances (14), controlled the highest CF% (77.8) and had three high-danger chances as well.

They were buzzing around the Sabres net all night and look to have found some strong chemistry,

Martin Necas and Sebastian Aho also continue to showcase some strong chemistry, connecting on yet another overtime winner.

The pair also worked pulled off some pretty passing along with Dmitry Orlov for the Canes' second goal of the game which was scored by Brady Skjei.

Speaking of Orlov, the Russian defender led the team in chances (22), had the second highest Corsi For % (73.33) and had an assist. He's really been settling in as of late.

    Antti Raanta

It was a masterclass of a performance by 'Father Finn' who made quite a few stupendous saves over the course of the match.

I've already gone into quite a bit of detail on Raanta's performance on Tuesday, so make sure to give it a read: Player of the Game: Antti Raanta
