The Carolina Hurricanes have had a roller coaster of a penalty kill this season.
It started the season off very poorly, brought itself back up to the middle of the pack, got toasted for four goals against in one game against the Tampa Bay Lightning and now sits just 21st in the league at a 76.9% success rate.
But despite the hit or miss nature of the kill, one thing that has stayed consistent about Carolina's kill is that it's dangerous.
Teams can't just go out there and relax a bit on the man-advantage because the Canes love to spring in a bit of offense on their PK and it's paid off as the team is tied for the league lead in shorthanded goals with six.
While Carolina has historically always had success scoring on the kill, they have actually managed to set a franchise record this season just 23 games in.
With four of their six goals having come from defenseman, the Hurricanes have now set a new franchise record for shorthanded goals by blueliners in a single season.
The previous record was three shorthanded goals from defensemen set in both 2006-07 and 1992-93.
In fact, Carolina is the only team in the NHL this season to even have multiple shorthanded goals from defensemen with Jaccob Slavin (2), Brent Burns (1) and Brady Skjei (1) all having picked up shorthanded tallies.
Slavin picked up both of his early in the season against the Ottawa Senators and San Jose Sharks, Burns nailed an empty-netter against the Edmonton Oilers and Skjei set the record with a quick shot against the Buffalo Sabres.
We all know that the Canes' blueline can score being that they set the franchise record for total goals by defensemen just last season, so it's nice to see them continue to rack up the accolades.
