It's rather unusual for a team to carry three NHL goaltenders, but the Carolina Hurricanes are definitely not your average team.
Last season, the Canes' three-headed tandem of Frederik Andersen, Antti Raanta and Pyotr Kochetkov all saw significant time.
Each goaltender played over 20 games, all three recorded double-digit wins — in fact they were the fastest trio to reach the 10-win mark each, doing so in just 49 games — and they led the league in total shutouts with nine.
For all intents and purposes, the trio was highly successful even if none of the three really stood out stats-wise, outside of Andersen's tremendous playoff run. Looking ahead to the upcoming season, their overall level of play isn't expected to dip that much. Neither is their usage.
The one glaring factor with the Hurricanes' goaltending situation is health.
Last year, even though all three goaltenders missed good chunks of time, Andersen and Raanta were by far the most banged up and were routinely in and out of the lineup.
Perhaps that's why Kochetkov is viewed as the most likely backup to become a starter this season, receiving six out of 34 votes in a recent THN poll conducted by staff writers. Kochetkov tied for first in that category with Boston's Jeremy Swayman.
Last year, the 24-year-old Kochetkov played in 24 games — the fewest of the Carolina goalies — while posting a 12-7-5 record and a 2.44 GAA and .909 save percentage. Based on the poll, don't be surprised if he ends up taking more of a starring role for a team that many are picking to go all the way and contend for a Stanley Cup.
