The Carolina Hurricanes selected Swedish winger Filip Ekberg with their 221st and final pick of the 2025 NHL Draft. Ekberg, 18, is a 5-foot-10 winger, who seemed to slip in the draft after a bit of a slower start in his first OHL season. However, the Swede has a lot of offensive upside and was Sweden's leading scorer at the U18 World Championships with 18 points, the most ever in team history. "He got off to a slow start, was battling an illness in Ottawa, so some of the games at the very beginning of the year, he wasn't able to play the entire game," said Carolina Hurricanes Associate General Manager Darren Yorke. "So it was something that got a bit undiagnosed. Once he was able to manage it, his season took off culminating in leading Sweden in scoring at the under-18s. A guy that can score off the rush, he's got a dangerous shot, but at the same time, can also make you miss with his skills."
