Training camps around the NHL are quickly approaching and the last contracts are being dished out. When it seemed like former Chicago Blackhawks veteran defenseman Jarred Tinordi wasn't getting a deal, he signed a two-way contract with the Calgary Flames at $800,000 AAV.

The Blackhawks didn't need to bring the 32-year-old back as the team signed T.J. Brodie and Alec Martinez while having a plethora of young talent competing for spots in the NHL this season.

The Flames on the other hand have a very volatile defensive group in that there are a lot of question marks. The team is rebuilding, and for now, have two staples on defense, Mackenzie Weegar and Rasmus Andersson. Either of them could be traded as rumors are out there involving the Flames breaking down the roster even further.

While Tinordi has only played 205 regular season games in the NHL, he has been around and played for six different teams including four Original Six teams. He provides depth where the Flames very well may need it this season to just get by. It is likely a season in which Calgary's staff finds out where players fit in and who is worth keeping around, but if some younger defensemen struggle and shouldn't be in the NHL, Tinordi is able to step in like he had to last season for Chicago.

Kyle Davidson goes in depth on the development and timing of when young players on the Blackhawks will come into the lineup.

Tinordi averaged under 16 minutes per game last season, but got into 52 games. He plays the game hard and is more defensively minded. The veteran registered 64 penalty minutes, 94 blocked shots, and 171 hits. He had a larger role in Chicago the past two seasons than anywhere else in his career, so the Flames have a solid safety net who may even make the team out of training camp.
