USA Today Network - Blackhawks Place D-Man Connor Murphy on IR

The Chicago Blackhawks placed veteran defenseman Connor Murphy on injured reserve with a groin strain on Monday before their game against the Canucks in Vancouver.

The move is retroactive to Jan. 16 and covers the three games Murphy missed heading into Monday. Originally, coach Luke Richardson thought the 30-year-old Murphy's condition would be day-to-day.

The steady Murphy has two goals and six assists in 43 games and is a minus-19 on a team that entered Monday having allowed 62 more goals than it scored. He's averaged 19:51 of ice time per game, third on the team behind defensemen Seth Jones and Alex Vlasic.

Murphy is in his 11th NHL season and seventh with Chicago.

The Blackhawks activated forward Nick Foligno (broken left finger) from the IR in a corresponding roster move.
