Connor Bedard Tucks in Jaw-Dropping Lacrosse-Style Goal, but Blackhawks Blow Lead Again in 7-5 Loss to Blues
NHL rookie scoring leader Connor Bedard pitched in a jaw-dropping lacrosse-style goal in the first period and Nick Foglino scored twice, but the Chicago blew a lead again and lost 7-5 to the Blues in St. Louis on Saturday.
For the second straight night, the Blackhawks allowed an opponent to score five unanswered goal to close out the contest. The Montréal Canadiens did it on Friday in their 5-2 victory in Chicago.
Bedard circled the net, scooped up the puck and whipped it in over the left shoulder of stunned St. Louis goalie Jordan Binnington at 3:49 of the first period. That tied it at 1, just 45 seconds after the Blues Robert Thomas opened the scoring,
“There was just no one there, and just thought it was a good play, and yeah, kind of went for it," Bedard said during a TV interview.
It was the 18-year-old Bedard's 13th goal. He leads all NHL rookies with 30 points.
“We’ve seen a couple of things like that," Blackhawks coach Luke Richardson said. "He’s got quick hands, and I didn’t even realize what happened until it went in. That’s the vision that he has.
"He can see that when the puck is probably wobbling a little bit. He gets his blade under it and he can scoop it as he’s moving. He’s able to do those things. Unfortunately we couldn’t propel it into a win tonight.” See video.

Bedard Launches Attack: Foligno Extends It
Bedard's dazzling move ignited the last-place Blackhawks' attack. They forechecked effectively and extended their lead to 5-2 lead at 5:16 of the third period on Foligno's end-to-end shorthanded goal.
The 36-year-old forward skated straight down left wing from his own zone, cut in past the Blues defense to the net and jammed in a shot.
Foligno, who had scored a power-play goal just 20 seconds into the second period, became the first Blackhawks to post a power-play and short-handed score in a game since 2018. The Blackhawks de facto captain led his team's forwards with 19:13 of ice time.
Arvid Soderblom made 35 saves for Chicago, which lost for the sixth time in seven games. Anthony Beauvillier and Jason Dickinson also scored for the Blackhawks and Taylor Raddysh had three assists. See video.
Jordan Kyrou scored twice, and Justin Faulk, Jake Neighbours and Brandon Saad also scored in the third period to help the St. Louis overcome a three-goal deficit.
Colton Parayko also connected. Binnington stopped 15 of 20 shots for St. Louis, which improved to 4-1 under interim coach Drew Bannister.
The Blackhawks entered 7-0-0 when scoring four or more goals this season. St. Louis had been 0-14-0 when trailing after two periods.
