GM Kyle Davidson senses something different, and sees more fans and interest.
Entering Sunday's game with St. Louis, the Chicago Blackhawks are just 6-12-0. That's roughly the same winning percentage that landed them with the third-worst record in the NHL last season.
Blackhawks general manager Kyle Davidson's team is depleted and probably heading for another finish near the bottom of the NHL. But he says things feel different.
The reason: Connor Bedard.
The NHL's top draft pick of 2023 not only leads all rookie scorers with 10 goals and 17 points, he's driving other numbers.
"At our morning skate, at our warmups there are just more people," Davidson said. "They've got Bedard signs. Whether it's at the hotel or after games, the people are always there."
It's nothing creepy. Davidson calls it "intrigue" and thinks it's good for the Blackhawks, even if the wins aren't there yet.
"You know, hope, excitement is a big thing for a team, a fan base," Davidson said. "He along with a lot of our other prospects have provided people with that.
"So there's some positive momentum there and you see it every day at the rink. You hear it. You feel it." See video.
The 18-year-old Bedard helps after skates and practices by hanging out on the ice and constantly signing whatever for kids.
Davidson has been delighted with Bedard's effort and production on the ice. The GM also has been impressed by the way the rookie carries himself off the ice, calling it "fantastic."
"I check in with him every now and then, but it's not even something that crosses my mind any more," Davidson said. Coming into the league, you never know...18.
"But he's just taken it in stride. I don't think he's fazed by it at all."
