Colorado's elite forward set a new franchise record in the matchup against the Edmonton Oilers.
Nathan MacKinnon broke and set new records all season long so it's no surprise he did so in the last game of the regular season against the Edmonton Oilers.
The 28-year-old elite forward assisted on Mikko Rantanen's goal at 14:12 in the first period which tied him with Peter Stastny's all-time Quebec Nordiques/Colorado Avalanche franchise record for most points in a season (139 in 1981-82). He earned an assist on Valeri Nichushkin's second goal of the game which broke the tie and officially put him in the top spot with 140.
"Yeah, it's cool. I mean, definitely legend Peter Stastny, one of the best ever to play. You know, he had some crazy seasons," MacKinnon said after the win against Edmonton. "You know, I think he had a lot better seasons than me overall — just one but obviously I think it's a team accomplishment. Other guys helped me out along the way. Tons of great hockey this season. But you know, my focus is definitely on the playoffs and not really thinking about this at all, to be honest."
The Halifax, Nova Scotia native had 51 goals coming into Thursday night's game — his first 50-plus goal season of his career.
"Yeah, it feels good. You know, I never thought in my life I'd score 50, honestly. I never really thought I would," MacKinnon said after the win. "It feels good obviously, a lot of amazing plays from everybody all season — a lot of empty nets. You know a lot of hard work from the whole lineup. Like it's a team achievement, honestly. It's a team sport, obviously, and it's tough to get there. You can't do it alone."
MacKinnon is one of the top candidates for the Hart Trophy — with all the milestones he has hit in his most successful season, he has made a very solid case why he deserves the award.
