The Colorado Avalanche shut out the Chicago Blackhawks 4-0 Thursday night at Ball Arena to start the season 4-0 — the first time since 2019-20.

The Avs showed depth and diversity with goals from four different players in all possible scenarios — shorthanded, power-play and even-strength.

Logan O'Connor scored his second shorthanded goal of the season on a pass from Josh Manson at 11:46 in the first period.

"Scoring that early in the game on the penalty kill was definitely nice to start off the game for us," the 27-year-old forward said after the win.

Ryan Johansen notched his first in burgundy and blue with less than two minutes left in the first. The 31-year-old forward pushed hard in front of the net to bat the puck in past Petr Mrazek on the power play and put the Avs up 2-0.

"He's had some really good chances. He's been in on a few of our goals. I liked the way he got it, like getting gritty and hungry at the net," head coach Jared Bednar said about Johansen's goal. "There's a loose puck sitting there. He stays on it. I mean, that's what he can do."

Tomas Tatar assisted on the third and fourth goals from Devon Toews and Nathan MacKinnon after he shifted to the top line with them.

"I felt it was the right time for me to get a chance there. I enjoyed it a lot, and they're great players, it's going to feel nice with them," Tatar said. "I feel like I start to find my legs as the game is going on ... "

Alexandar Georgiev stopped 18 shots to earn his first shutout of the season in the team's home opener.

"Game went pretty well for me. I felt sharp and made some good saves," the 27-year-old goaltender said. "We cleaned up the rebounds pretty well so great effort and glad we got off to a good start here."

Avs captain Gabriel Landeskog made an appearance during opening ceremonies to introduce the team. He said he spends as much time with the team as he can, but he continues his rehabilitation and is not always in Colorado.

The Avalanche face off against the Carolina Hurricanes who are 3-2 coming into Ball Arena on Saturday at 7 p.m.
