To no surprise and rightfully earned, Nathan MacKinnon was named the NHL's First Star of the Month for December. It was the third time in his career (November 2017 and April 2021) that he's been number one on the NHL's Three Stars of the Month list.
MacKinnon tallied 29 points in 15 games which set a franchise record for a single calendar month — overthrowing Peter Stastny’s 28 in February 1981 with the Quebec Nordiques — and tops the list for the league.

The 28-year-old made the scoresheet in every game but one in December and has scored in every home game since the season began. His overall point streak came to an end at 19 games (Nov. 20 – Dec. 27) against the St. Louis Blues but it tied for the third-longest in Avalanche/Nordiques history.
The Halifax, Nova Scotia native had nine multi-point games in the last of month of the year, including a five-point game against the Ottawa Senators which was the first four-goal game by any Avalanche player ever.
MacKinnon is second in points overall in the NHL and first in assists with 39. His power-play performance has been outstanding this season as he is No. 1 in the NHL with 19 assists.
"He's always been one of the most dedicated guys but over the years, he's taken it to a new level. He never stops looking for ways to improve — strengthen himself, take care of himself," head coach Jared Bednar said about his elite forward in December.
