Nathan MacKinnon now holds the record for most points in a season by an Avalanche player after he hit 121 — passing Joe Sakic's record of 120. Nathan MacKinnon is amidst a career season and his latest milestone was achieved in the 5-4 overtime win against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Sunday afternoon. The 28-year-old scored points No. 121 and 122 which surpassed the previous high in a season by an Avalanche player — Joe Sakic (120). "I mean, this guy's a phenomenal player, right? But that's pretty good company when you're talking about our boss [Sakic]," head coach Jared Bednar said. "It's, you know, [Sakic] had such a phenomenal career and then you watch what Nate's doing, you know, and it just speaks to who Nate is as a player and what he's capable of." MacKinnon has said that he does not pay attention to records or milestones much, and although this one was significant, he did not have much to say — but what he said was impactful. "It's tough to answer that. I mean, obviously Joe (Sakic) had it and I don't think I'm as good as Joe ever was," the elite center said. "So it's a, yeah, it's a good number. I guess it's a good stat to have but a lot of guys are having special seasons for sure." MacKinnon also extended his home point-scoring streak to 34 games and his overall point-scoring streak to 18. This is his second 18-plus game point streak this season which made him the second player in NHL history to achieve that milestone. Wayne Gretzky did it twice in his career (1981-82 and 1985-86). MacKinnon sits behind The Great One for longest home point scoring streak since start of season when he scored in every home game (40) with the Los Angeles Kings in the 1989-90 season. The Halifax, Nova Scotia native has been setting new records and hitting milestones all season after a career season last year. MacKinnon's friend and linemate Jonathan Drouin said his old junior teammate deserves all the praise he has earned. "Even you look at that point streak, every time they show the names that are out there — Guy LaFleur, Wayne Gretzky, Joe Sakic, Peter Forsberg all those guys," Drouin said. "He's having a hell of a season but credit to him because he's put a lot of work in." No matter which career highs MacKinnon hits, the ultimate goal for him and his teammates is to win the Stanley Cup — which is a high possibility with him at the wheel.
