Kent Johnson(14), Kirill Marchenko(19), James van Riemsdyk(10), and Dmitri Voronkov(18) scored the goal for Columbus, and Daniil Tarasov allowed 6 goals on 42 shots in the Hurricanes 7-4 win over the Blue Jackets on Thursday night.
If you were shocked by this game, you shouldn't have been, because the Hurricane warning flags were flying high at Lenovo Center for all to see.
The Blue Jackets scored twice in under three minutes in the first and took a 2-0 lead into the second. But the Hurricanes exploded in the second period with five goals in eight minutes to brush away the Jackets. Columbus did score two more times in the second period with two goals in under two minutes, but you could tell that just annoyed Carolina because they put the clamps down for the rest of the game.
In the second and third periods, the Jackets were outshot 34-9 and let in seven goals. For the game, the Hurricanes had 44 scoring chances to the Jackets 9. They also had 22 high-danger chances to the Jackets 6. Carolina's Corsi and Fenwick shares were almost 70%, and their expected goals were almost six for the game. If you didn't watch this game and just paid attention to the simple stats, you'd think this game was close, but in reality, it wasn't close at all. It was a massacre.
Defenseman Jack Johnson, who had two assists said, "They don't allow you to make a lot of plays in the offensive zone and even in the neutral zone. We managed it well in the first and the third, but you can't have a second period like that and expect good things against a good team."
Dean Evason said after the game, "In the first period, we were able to stifle them a little bit. We just gave them a little crack and they got through it. We were reeling a little bit, but the group hung in there and obviously we kept plugging away. We just couldn't find a way at the end."
