Tough scene Monday night as Cale Makar did not return to the game against the Calgary Flames after taking a hard hit from Adam Klapka in the second period.

The injury is especially notable given Makar had not missed a game all season prior to Monday night, appearing in all 73 games while recording an impressive 75 points. His durability and elite production have been key factors in Colorado’s success this year.

Early reactions from social media doctors suggest Makar may have suffered a separated shoulder. Recovery timelines for that type of injury can vary. In some cases it can be day-to-day, while more severe separations may require surgery. NHL players often miss a couple of weeks depending on the severity.

This comes at an important time for the Colorado Avalanche, who currently lead the Dallas Stars by eight points in the Presidents’ Trophy race. With just eight games left for Dallas, there is still a chance to close the gap if Colorado is without Makar.

There is also a strong possibility these teams could meet in the second round of the playoffs. While Makar’s absence could impact that matchup, it is always unfortunate to see a player of his caliber injured at this stage of the season.
