On this day, March 10, 2003, the Dallas Stars acquired veteran forward Stu Barnes from the Buffalo Sabres in exchange for forward Michael Ryan and a 2003 second-round draft pick that was later used by Buffalo to select Branislav Fabry.

Barnes quickly became a reliable depth forward for Dallas after arriving at the trade deadline. Over parts of five seasons with the Stars from 2002-03 through 2006-07, Barnes appeared in 250 games and recorded 41 goals and 56 assists for 97 points while providing steady two-way play and veteran leadership down the middle.

Ryan, who was originally drafted by Dallas in the second round (32nd overall) of the 1999 NHL Draft, never appeared in an NHL game for the Stars before being moved in the deal. He later went on to play 83 NHL games with Buffalo.

The draft pick sent to Buffalo became Branislav Fabry, who did not play in the NHL.
