Brace Hemmelgarn-USA TODAY Sports - THN Enforcers Week: The Top 5 Dallas Stars Enforcers

Fighting hasn’t been an integral part of the Dallas Stars’ game for the past half decade, and it appears that trend will continue. Head coach Pete DeBoer’s contingent ranked 27th in the NHL with just 13 fights last season and the current roster doesn’t include any players with a real penchant for fisticuffs. Nevertheless, a few noteworthy fighters have represented The Big D over the years.

    1. Krys Barch

Barch definitely earned his stripes as a tried-and-true scrapper during his six seasons with Dallas, readily dropping the gloves and dishing out 385 hits along the way. The gritty forward’s most prolific year in the fight department was the 2009-10 campaign when he went toe-to-toe 20 times in just 63 games and fought then-Coyotes tough guy Paul Bissonette on four separate occasions, including twice in a single contest. Barch went on to play for the Panthers and Devils, where he continued to rack up his fair share of penalty minutes before hanging up his skates. His most frequent opponent fight-wise over the years was heavyweight Shawn Thornton.

    2. Steve Ott

One of the most prolific pests during his playing days, Ott was an absolute master at getting under his opponents’ skin. Selected 25th overall by the Stars in the 2000 NHL Draft, he spent nine seasons providing the Texas-based squad with trademark physicality to the tune of 1,183 hits and the second-most penalty minutes in franchise history. Ott fought 16 times during his first full year in the League in 2003-04, engaging the likes of Sean Avery and Matthew Barnaby, which was clearly a sign of things to come. It was evident rather quickly that Ott wouldn’t back down from a challenge. Fighting aside, he provided the Stars with some notable offense, too, including scoring a career-high 22 goals in 2009-10.

    3. Grant Marshall

Grant Marshall immediately made his presence felt in the Lonestar State by reaching double-digit fight totals for three consecutive seasons at the outset of his career in the mid-to-late 90s, battling tough customers like Bryan McCabe, Stu Grimson, Luke Richardson and Gino Odjick. Marshall’s efforts ultimately paid dividends during the 1999 playoffs when the Stars won the Stanley Cup. Four years later, he helped the Devils hoist the coveted trophy with six postseason goals, including the series-clinching goal in the Eastern Conference Semifinals.

    4. Brenden Morrow

835 GP 1,203 PIMS 52 fights (with the Stars)

The former Stars’ captain will always be a fan-favorite in Dallas for his work ethic, feistiness and determination. Morrow remains the franchise leader in penalty minutes and threw nearly 950 hits during his lengthy 13-year tenure with the club that selected him 25th overall in 1997. When he wasn’t valiantly standing up for his teammates, Morrow also put up impressive numbers in the production department. He registered seven 20-goal seasons and reached the 30-goal plateau on two occasions in Stars colors, finishing with 243 goals and 528 points before landing in Pittsburgh, St. Louis and Tampa Bay to close his career.

    5. Antoine Roussel

413 GP 806 PIMS 51 fights (with the Stars)

Roussel wasted little time establishing himself as a physical force for the Stars, consistently playing a hard-nosed brand of hockey from the moment he entered the NHL ranks in 2012-13. He registered a career-high 209 penalty minutes during his second season, and posted the first of back-to-back campaigns of 11 tussles. Roussel engaged a host of enforcers while in a Dallas uniform for six seasons, ranging from Zack Kassian and Rich Clune to Dan Carcillo and Andrew Shaw. Speaking of Shaw, Roussel’s tilt against the former Chicago Blackhawks standout in December 2013 is a must-watch. The Frenchman wasn’t a slouch offensively either in Texas, stringing together four consecutive 20-point seasons.
