Matt Duchene, Jake Oettinger and Roope Hintz were among the notables against Columbus.
DALLAS - The Stars improved to 5-1-1 on the season with a 5-3 win over the Blue Jackets on Monday night at the American Airlines Center.
Five different players lit the lamp for head coach Pete DeBoer's contingent, including Thomas Harley, Roope Hintz, Matt Duchene, Evgenii Dadonov and Wyatt Johnston.
Goaltender Jake Oettinger made 22 saves between the pipes.
Here are a few key takeaways from the contest:
That's one, more to come: Duchene had come close to scoring his first with the Stars on several occasions thus far this season before finally accomplishing the feat during the third period.
“It’s nice to get the first one. The first one is always the hardest during the season," said Duchene, who buried a rebound off a shot from defenseman Ryan Suter. "It was probably our luckiest and least dangerous play of the game that ended up in the net."
The 32-year-old centerman also had four shots on goal and won 86 percent of his draws, so it was definitely a well-rounded performance.
With that in mind, it shouldn't come as a surprise that DeBoer called Duchene "the best player on the ice tonight" for the home team.
A salute to Jake: Just under a minute after Duchene lit the lamp to give the Stars a 3-2 advantage, Oettinger made a spectacular point-blank glove save on Blue Jackets captain Boone Jenner.
It was a pivotal moment in the game, of course, and he didn't disappoint.
"This team is full of stars and guys are going to step up at different times, and Jake has been our best player this year so far. Tonight, there were a couple of tough ones that went in on him, kind of bad bounces, and then he makes that save. It just shows the maturity, the even-keel nature of a young guy who was able to make a huge play for us at the right time and preserve a one-goal lead," praised Duchene. "He’s blown me away so far in the way he plays."
Admittedly, the 24-year-old netminder felt compelled to rise to the occasion.
“There’s turning points like that in every game. I let in a soft goal, so I felt like I owed the team a big stop," explained Oettinger. "It's the same as the goals we had, those are just as timely as a save. Every night there’s a few breakdowns where I can step up and make an impact on the game, and that was one of them.”
The Boston University product boasts a 4-0-1 record in five starts, along with a 1.74 goals-against average and a .940 save percentage.
Love for Roope: With an assist on Harley's tally in the first period, Hintz became the fastest Stars player in franchise history to reach 250 points.
He accomplished the feat in his 318th game with the squad.
DeBoer spoke glowingly about the incredibly talented Finn during his postgame press conference.
"The best compliment I can give Roope is I have more coaches from other teams that I sit and talk with or chat with just talk about how underrated he is. He doesn’t get the credit nationally or internationally," said DeBoer. "This guy is one of the best in the world. He’s physical, he’s fast, he’s hard, he makes plays, he can play defense, he can play offense, and he’s a prototypical number one center. There’s probably maybe 10 in the League, in the world, in that category, and he’s one of them. He brings it all."
The Stars embark on three-game road trip to Western Canada on Tuesday with stops in Calgary (Nov. 1), Edmonton (Nov. 2) and Vancouver (Nov. 4).
