Following a three-way goaltending fiasco involving Dominik Hasek, Curtis Joseph, and Manny Legace during the 2003–04 NHL season, the Detroit Red Wings cut ties with both Hasek and Joseph and promoted Legace to starting goaltender.
Joseph joined the Phoenix Coyotes, while Hasek joined the Ottawa Senators. During the 2005–06 season, Hasek posted great numbers with Ottawa heading into the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, where he represented Czechia.
However, he suffered a torn adductor muscle during the tournament, an injury that sidelined him for the remainder of Ottawa’s regular season and their brief appearance in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, where they were eliminated in the opening round by the Buffalo Sabres.
Just when it seemed Hasek’s career might be over, Detroit came calling.
Hasek rejoined the Red Wings and, after agreeing to return for an additional season, won his second Stanley Cup in 2008, adding another championship to his Hall of Fame career.
