Earlier on Monday, the Detroit Red Wings announced that defenseman Axel Sandin-Pellikka, a promising young blueliner who made the team out of Training Camp, was being assigned to the AHL’s Grand Rapids Griffins.
Considering he hadn’t played since March 6, this is the best course of action if he wasn’t going to see regular ice time with Detroit.
He’ll now join a Griffins team that has already set numerous records this season, where continuing to log consistent minutes will be crucial for his development and adjustment to the North American style of play.
In 63 games with Detroit this season, he recorded six goals and 13 assists, but also posted a minus-21 rating while averaging 16:18 of ice time.
