It was on this day in 1996 that Detroit Red Wings captain Steve Yzerman delivered one of the most legendary moments of his Hall of Fame career.

His blast from just inside the blue line against the St. Louis Blues shortly into the second overtime of Game 7 in the Western Conference Semifinal propelled Detroit to their second straight Conference Final appearance.

While the Red Wings would ultimately fall to the Colorado Avalanche in the series that officially sparked the legendary rivalry, they would win the Stanley Cup in each of the two following seasons, with Yzerman taking home the Conn Smythe Trophy as postseason MVP in 1998.
