The Detroit Red Wings announced Monday morning that the iconic No. 91 jersey number of Sergei Fedorov will be retired.

The Detroit Red Wings have announced they will officially retire Sergei Fedorov's iconic No. 91 jersey in a ceremony on January 12 before a game against the Carolina Hurricanes.

One signal to the announcement was the first letter of the Red Wings posts via twitter from 9:10 AM on Saturday to 9:10 on Monday.

Fedorov, who defected from the Soviet Union to join the NHL, became one of the most electrifying players in league history, winning the Hart Trophy in 1994 and helping the Red Wings capture three Stanley Cups (1997, 1998, 2002). Despite a rocky relationship with the franchise—including a post-championship contract holdout and eventual departure in 2003—Fedorov left an indelible mark, ranking sixth all-time in team scoring with 954 points.

Though once booed by fans, he has since been warmly welcomed back, particularly during the 2013 Alumni Game, and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2015.
