On this day in 1997, the Detroit Red Wings finally captured the Stanley Cup for the first time in 42 years.

Thanks to a clutch performance in the postseason, veteran goaltender Mike Vernon was named the winner of the Conn Smythe Trophy as the postseason's most valuable player.

During the 1997 playoffs, Vernon went 16-4 with a solid 1.76 goals-against average, a .927 save percentage, and a shutout.

He remains the most recent Red Wings goaltender to capture the award.
