The Detroit Red Wings will face the New York Islanders on Thursday night in their annual Hockey Fights Cancer game.

Earlier in the day on Thursday, Red Wings winger Emmitt Finnie shared a heartfelt tribute to his mother, who has been battling liver cancer for three years, via the Red Wings’ social media channels.

In the video, Finnie sat in a chair wearing the Red Wings’ Hockey Fights Cancer jersey and spoke about the impact his mother has had on his life.

"She has fought a lot and has been fighting for three years, so I really admire her fight and how she takes every day so positive and puts a smile on her face for me and my siblings and for our family," Finnie said "This month is a big one for me, and just seeing what other families have to go through and what my family has been through, you are not alone through this, and we are going to keep fighting with you. So stay positive and keep fighting."

Finnie continued by speaking on his mom's influence on his life saying he tries "not taking anything for granted" after seeing her battle with cancer.

"How hard she works really inspires me every day to bring my best and give it my all," Finnie explained "She is my number one supporter, and how much she fights for my family means a lot to me."

He concluded the video by holding up a sign that read, "I’m Emmitt Finnie and I fight for my mom."

The NHL’s Hockey Fights Cancer initiative, now in its 20th year, raises awareness and funds to support those affected by cancer. Each season, players, teams, and fans come together to honor loved ones, share personal stories, and raise money for cancer research and patient support programs.
