The Red Wings have taken to social media to campaign for Alex Lyon to be named to the All-Star Game in Toronto

Alex DeBrincat is locked in as the Detroit Red Wings initial representative at the 2024 NHL All-Star Game in Toronto.  DeBrincat was among the first round of selections for the game, with one player from each team around the league named.

Now, with fan voting set to round out the all-star rosters, the Red Wings have taken to social media to campaign for goaltender Alex Lyon to be added to the fold.

Lyon has played 12 games in net for Detroit this season, earning an 8-4-0 record, 2.51 goals against average, and .920 save percentage.

Perhaps the most notable aspect of Detroit's campaign on Lyon's behalf (whether it proves successful or not) is how unlikely it would have seemed to start the season.  Lyon couldn't even get onto the bench as a backup for the first month of the season, instead watching games from the press box as the Red Wings' third goalie behind Ville Husso and James Reimer.

Now, with Husso injured and Reimer struggling, Lyon is Detroit's clear number one option in net, to such a degree that the team itself is campaigning for him to be an all-star.  Even when Husso returns to health (a return that is not yet imminent), it's difficult to imagine that he will supplant Lyon as the team's top netminder.

Husso has nine wins in 18 appearances (17 starts) this season, with an .893 save percentage and 3.53 GAA, while Reimer has just three wins in 12 games with an .889 SV% and 3.41 GAA.

For Lyon, it's been a season of seizing an opportunity and running with it, and perhaps that run will continue all the way to an all-star appearance. The fan vote portion of all-star selection concludes today.
