Red Wings prospect Carter Mazur scores an overtime goal to end the Grand Rapids Griffins regular season on a high note
The Grand Rapids Griffins wrapped up their regular season last night on home ice at Van Andel Arena, and thanks to Carter Mazur, they did so in style. To earn a 2-1 victory over the Milwaukee Admirals, Mazur—whom the Red Wings selected in the third round of the 2021 NHL Draft—scored the overtime winner as Austin Czarnik threw a puck to the net from the slot, which banked in off Mazur to give GR the win.
It only feels appropriate to move on from the regular season and on to the playoffs with a greasy goal befitting the postseason. And some extra-curricular tensions between the two teams—in which Mazur was principally involved—also helped to set a postseason mood.
At his end-of-season press conference, in reference to goaltender Sebastian Cossa, Detroit GM Steve Yzerman said, "the coach will decide who plays in the [Calder Cup] playoffs, but he's progressed, and we're really hoping for a whole host of reasons that he obviously has a successful, long playoff run, and he continues to go and play well. And if he does get the net and run with it, that puts him closer to the NHL."
The same logic applies for a prospect like Mazur, for whom a strong postseason and deep run for the Griffins could represent a fast-track or launching pad to an NHL roster spot come the fall. Grand Rapids' postseason journey will begin a week from Wednesday—with Game 1 between the Griffins and Rockford Ice Hogs set for May 1st at Van Andel.
