The Grand Rapids Griffins fall to 5-8-1 following a home split to the Manitoba Moose this weekend
Over the weekend, the Grand Rapids Griffins split a home series at Van Andel Arena to the Manitoba Moose (AHL affiliate of the Winnipeg Jets).
On Friday, the Griffins raced out to a 5-0 lead and eventually claimed a 5-1 victory. Joel L'Esperance scored twice, Simon Edvinsson gave two assists, and Jonatan Berggren scored and gave an assist. Michael Hutchinson stopped 29 of the 30 Moose shots that came his way in net.
On Sunday evening, the Griffins fell 3-2 to Manitoba. Once again, Berggren was a bright spot for Grand Rapids, assisting on Austin Czarnik's first period goal and scoring one of his own in the third as the Griffins attempted a comeback. Hutchinson started again in goal, making 18 saves on 21 shots.
With the four-point weekend, Berggren now ranks second on the team in scoring with 11 points (four goals and seven assists) in 11 AHL games. Taro Hirose leads the team in points with 16 (five goals and 11 assists) in 15 games. Edvinsson—who enjoyed a three-assist weekend himself—˘ranks third on the Griffins in scoring with three goals and seven assists for 10 points in 15 games.
After the weekend, the Griffins are 5-8-1, sitting at sixth of seven teams in the AHL's Central Division. Goal scoring and penalties have both been issues from GR. They are tied for the second most penalty minutes in the division (at 233), and they have scored the third fewest goals (40).
The Griffins will return to action on Wednesday for a home date with the Chicago Wolves.
