So, you’re telling me there’s a chance?

Unless mathematics rules a team out, anything can happen in hockey.

The Detroit Red Wings have their back against the ropes right now, especially after last night’s loss to the Colorado Avalanche. Not even the call-up of Sebastian Cossa could deliver a win for the Red Wings.

However, there is still a chance that the Red Wings can reach the playoffs.

According to MoneyPuck, they have a 7.2 percent chance of making the playoffs and a 6.5 percent chance of finishing in the second Wild Card Position.

A lot of things need to go right for the team. To make matters even more dire, a lot is riding on their game tomorrow night against the Ottawa Senators.

If they win against the Senators, their chances of making the playoffs go up to 10 percent (if they win in regulation) and 9.5 percent if they win in overtime. That’s a 2.8 and 2.3 percent increase (respectively).

But what if they lose in overtime? Or regulation? Well, things will take a turn for the worse.

The less disastrous scenario would be an overtime (or shootout) loss. The Red Wings chances of making the playoffs would only dip by 1.8 percent, down to 5.4 percent.

If the Red Wings fail to register a single point against the Senators their playoff chances drop to 2.9 percent.

It’s obvious that tomorrow night’s contest is important to a team fighting tooth and nail to stay in the playoff picture. Sadly, for them, a lot is riding on Thursday night’s game.

Will the Red Wings squeak into the playoffs or fall short once again? The jury is still out on that one.
