The Detroit captain jumped for joy at the 4–3 lead and his first non–empty net goal since Nov. 25. That margin nearly held to the final horn, but instead the Jackets clawed back even via van Riemsdyk's second of the night with 2:41 left in the third. McLellan challenged the goal unsuccessfully, putting Columbus to the power play. However, instead of riding their momentum, the Blue Jackets allowed the power play to swing the game one more time in the opposite direction. In the end, it was messy, but unequivocally, the Red Wings figured out a way to win, and that's what mattered most for a team in dire need of stockpiling points, a team that will now travel to Winnipeg for Saturday's game with the Jets having taking six of its last possible six.
