Is Being in a Playoff Spot by Thanksgiving Important? On a busy morning in Hockeytown Tuesday, the Detroit Red Wings announced that they are recalling forward Jonatan Berggren from the Grand Rapids Griffins. In 11 games with the Griffins this season, Berggren has four goals and seven assists. He is coming off a four-point performance across a two-game split with the Mantioba Moose over the weekend. Berggren has played two games with the Red Wings this season, but in those two contests, he spent a total of just 18:39 on the ice. Though most of his work has come at the AHL level this season, he did provide Detroit with an offensive spark a year ago, putting up 28 points in 67 games for the big club a year ago. The morning's biggest news was of course the Red Wings' signing of Patrick Kane [https://thehockeynews.com/nhl/detroit-red-wings/news/patrick-kane-chooses-the-red-wings-three-time-cup-winner-2013-conn-smythe-signs-one-year-deal-in-detroit]. As of this writing, Kane's signing has been reported by several different NHL insiders, but it hasn't yet been made official by the team. In calling up Berggren, Detroit has hit the NHL's maximum allowable roster size of 23 players. That would appear to suggest that either the Red Wings aren't done making moves for the day (i.e. they intend to make an additional trade to clear a spot for Kane) or that they do not anticipate Kane slotting into the line-up straight away (i.e. Kane ends up on LTIR to begin his tenure with Detroit, thus not requiring a roster spot). It's also possible that today's recall of Berggren is merely a paper transaction as the Red Wings re-organize their roster to accommodate Kane's arrival.
