Is Progress Being Made Toward D1 Women's Hockey in Michigan? For the 2022-23 season, Michigan was the fourth best represented U.S. in NCAA Division 1 hockey rosters, trailing only Minnesota, Massachusetts, and New York. Despite that, there are presently zero (0) D1 women's hockey programs in the state. This dynamic is an obvious detriment to the growth of women's and girls hockey within the state, when young athletes know that if they want to pursue their sport at the highest level, they will have to leave home to do so. In a recent Tweet, University of Michigan regent Jordan Acker suggested that he believes women's hockey is the next sport the school should adopt. That's an encouraging sign, of course, but without more tangible steps taken toward that end, it's hard to get too excited just yet. On the most recent episode of The Silky Mitten State, my co-host Connor Earegood and I discussed Acker's Tweet and the path forward for women's hockey in Michigan. You can see a sampling of that conversation in the video above.
