The Edmonton Oilers at 2-0-1  take on the 0-3 New York Islanders. It's the Connor McDavid vs. Matthew Schaefer show on Thursday night as the Isles try to get their first win and the Oilers try to win three straight and keep their strong start alive.

The Oilers were shuffling their lines again ahead of the game, with David Tomasek on the top line with McDavid and Andrew Mangiapane. Can McDavid get his first goal of the season?

    First Period:

Stuart Skinner gets the start again after a shutout against the New York Rangers. David Rittich gets the start for the Isles.

Evan Bouchard with another short pass attempt from behind the net, that seems to rarely work. A turnover almost resulted in a goal for the Islanders early. McDavid tried a similar play a minute later. Again, it didn't work. The Oilers have to get that habit out of the game and clean up those little tiny plays.

McDavid drew a power play, but just as quickly took a penalty and it became a 4-v-4 situation. No goals for either team.

Kasperi Kapanen got close as the puck sat near the goal line but didn't go in. Not long after, Kyle Palmieri got a good look on goal for the Islanders and probably should have scored on the wide open net, but lost the puck. The Oilers then created several dangerous chances. Skinner made a nice glove save to keep in 0-0.

Bouchard has his pocket picked by Barzal, who goes in alone and moves to the forehand to score unassisted at 16:23 to give the Islanders a 1-0 lead.

Matt Savoie made a good play toward the net and took a trip. Another power play for the Oilers. Tomasek got another good look, but he was in too tight. Leon Draisaitl took a return feed from McDavid a few seconds later and scored.

    The game is tied 1-1.

Bouchard with two more lackluster plays. Let's a defenseman get behind him on one play, then loses his man and Duclair gets a good look. Skinner makes a great save.

    Second Period:

A blocked shot by Cizikas led to some chances for the Oilers. Not many dangerous chances for either side as the first six minutes of the second period elapsed. Skinner made a couple more saves and looks solid again.

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins gets the Oilers' second goal of the game with a nice wrist shot near the top of the faceoff circle; nice release on the goal.

Skinner made a great save on Bo Horvat to keep it 2-1 for Edmonton. Tomasek took an offensive-zone penalty. The Oilers were able to kill the penalty.

A nice play from McDavid to Draisaitl resulted in a solid look, but Draisaitl missed the net. The Oilers drew another call, getting their second power play of the game. Bo Horvat got open shorthanded and put one past Skinner. The score was 2-2, and this was the second bad power play for Edmonton. The first was a penalty taken by McDavid and the second was a shorthanded goal against. It was a great pass by Pageau, in what almost looked like a set play.

The Islanders got a second look shorthanded but Skinner made the save. McDavid was stopped on a break to end the man advantage. This power play was the most end-to-end action of the game.

At the end of two periods, the score is tied 2-2. The Oilers' defense are struggling to handle the puck and getting caught on odd-man breaks. They'll have to be sharper in the third.

    Third Period:

The Oilers mixed up the lines to start the third period and Edmonton had some offensive zone time. However, Mattias Ekholm took an interference penalty. During the dying seconds of the man advantage, Savoie drew a penalty for hooking. That means 4-on-4 action until the Oilers get their own power play.

Stecher gets called for a penalty, giving the Islanders another power play. McDavid made a couple of nice plays on the PK, and Skinner made a solid save through traffic. The Oilers were able to kill off the penalty. The score remains tied with six minutes left.

Trent Frederic got over-aggressive and was called for high-sticking. The Islanders made quick work of the power play as Horvat scored on a one-timer from the slot. The Isles are up 3-2.

The Oilers pulled their goalie with two minutes remaining. The Oilers got several good looks and the Islanders just missed an empty net. With 10 seconds remaining, Horvat scored another one, giving him a hat trick on the night.

    Islanders win 4-2.
